Seeking to capture the timeless beauty found in the human figure in all my clay sculptures. I create partial-figure “abstracts” in three disciplines: high reliefs, bas reliefs, and freestanding works. My goal in each discipline is to produce something immediately recognizable by the viewer.

For high reliefs, think of the “missing” body parts as being out-of-view within the wall, or under the beach sand. What you see is similar to the entire figure I see with the background filing in due to visual impairments.

Bas reliefs are a great playground where foreshortening can visually fool you into thinking the figure has much greater depth than the physical clay. Such trickery only works within a small range of viewing angles, however.

Unlike high reliefs and bas reliefs, freestanding works can be enjoyed from any viewing angle and the full beauty of the human figure can be experienced.

Each sculpture is hand-built in clay. Molds and casts are never used, making each piece unique – just like each of us.

Where the Name Comes From

I am a very logical and rational engineer for whom “it figures” is quite fitting. “IT” is also a common abbreviation for Italy, home of the Renaissance, a significant influence intellectually and artistically. The realism captured by its great masters is stunning and awe-inspiring. “It Figures” also expresses my disdain for cubism and such. Those who see my art should immediately recognize what they are looking at, and never have to ponder, “What is that?”
